Lincoln National Forest Continues Post-Fire Flood Mitigation Work Near Ruidoso

July 16, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest has begun the next phase of post-fire flood mitigation work in areas affected by the South Fork Fire, with crews moving into Upper Cedar Creek Canyon beginningJuly 19, 2026. The work is part of a long-term effort to reduce flood impacts, stabilize watersheds, and support recovery across the fire scar.

Working with the U.S. Forest Service’s National Stream and Aquatic Ecology Center, the National Forest Foundation, and Rio Grande Return, crews will strategically place large woody debris made from dead standing trees within stream channels and floodplains. These natural structures are designed to slow water during high-flow events, reduce erosion, and help restore more natural stream function.

Flood mitigation work was completed earlier this year in Perk Canyon and will now focus on:

  • Upper Cedar Creek Canyon

  • Brady Canyon

All work will take place on National Forest System lands.

Residents and visitors may encounter temporary area closures near active work zones. These closures are expected to last several days at a time and are intended to protect public safety while crews complete the project. Visitors should watch for posted signs along nearby roads and trails and avoid entering closed areas.

The Village of Ruidoso appreciates the continued partnership of the Lincoln National Forest and its restoration partners as they work to reduce future flood risks and improve the long-term health of local watersheds following the South Fork Fire.
