Lincoln National Forest Reminds Visitors to Recreate Responsibly This Holiday Weekend
July 1, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — As residents and visitors head outdoors for the Fourth of July weekend, the Lincoln National Forest is reminding everyone to recreate responsibly and help protect the public lands that make southern New Mexico a special place to explore.
Whether you’re riding off-highway vehicles (OHVs), camping, hiking, or simply enjoying the forest, following posted rules helps preserve natural resources, protects wildlife, and ensures a safe experience for everyone.
OHV Reminders
Motor vehicles are only permitted on designated roads, trails, and areas identified on each district’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). Traveling off designated routes can cause lasting damage to forest resources and is prohibited.
Visitors should also remember:
Most designated OHV trails are limited to vehicles less than 50 inches wide.
Groups of more than 75 people participating in organized rides or gatherings must obtain a Special Use Permit.
Stay on designated routes and avoid creating new roads or tracks.
Slow down around camps, hikers, wildlife, and livestock.
Help reduce dust and noise near neighboring communities.
Pack out all trash and leave recreation areas cleaner than you found them.
Dispersed Camping
Dispersed camping is permitted up to 300 feet from an open road or trail, unless restricted by a closure order. Motor vehicles may leave designated roads only as necessary to access a dispersed campsite for unloading gear and supplies. Additional off-road travel is not allowed.
Visitors are encouraged to camp in existing sites whenever possible, respect posted closures, and minimize their impact on the landscape.
Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect
The Lincoln National Forest remains under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. Campfires are prohibited in dispersed camping areas, and fireworks are prohibited on all Forest Service lands. These restrictions help reduce wildfire risk during the busy holiday weekend.
Know Before You Go
Before heading into the forest:
