Village Updates Lead and Copper Service Line Inventory to Ensure Safe Drinking Water
To comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule, the Village of Ruidoso is updating its inventory of water service line materials that connect homes and businesses to the Village’s water system.
The Village’s drinking water continues to meet all state and federal safety standards. This inventory update does not mean that lead has been detected in the water—it is a proactive, federally required step to identify and document all service line materials.
This effort is part of a nationwide program to identify and replace water service lines that may contain lead or galvanized pipe. The goal is to ensure that every property in Ruidoso is served by safe, lead-free infrastructure.
The deadline for completing the inventory is November 1, 2027. The deadline to replace all lead and galvanized lines is November 1, 2037.
Why Some Residents Are Receiving Letters
Later this week, some Village of Ruidoso utility customers will receive a letter identifying the current status of their property’s service line. The letter will indicate whether the service line is galvanized, unknown, or confirmed to be lead-free, based on available records.
Residents who receive a letter will also be asked to complete a brief online survey to help the Village verify or update the materials on their property.
If your home was built after 1986, your plumbing should already be lead-free. You can submit proof of construction date to the Village so your record can be updated.
What the Inventory Means
• The EPA requires all water utilities to complete an updated lead and copper inventory by November 1, 2027.
• Any lead or galvanized lines identified must be replaced by November 1, 2037.
