Lincoln National Forest Announces Planned Pile Burns Near Ruidoso December 2-12, 2025
Nov. 26, 2025 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest plans to conduct prescribed pile burns December 2–12, pending favorable weather and required approvals. These operations are designed to reduce hazardous fuels, lessen the risk of extreme wildfire, and improve forest health. Work will only proceed when conditions and staffing levels support safe, effective implementation.
The planned treatment includes the Ruidoso Tower Prescribed Pile Burn, covering approximately 10 acres of hand piles surrounding the Ruidoso Lookout Tower. For public safety, this area may be temporarily closed, and visitors should watch for posted signs along nearby roads and trails. After ignition, crews will remain on-site for several weeks to extinguish hot spots and secure the perimeter.
Smoke & Safety
Residents in Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, Hondo Valley, and Alto may notice smoke during operations. Drivers are urged to use caution in smoky areas:
• Slow down
• Turn on headlights
• Use hazard lights when visibility is significantly reduced
Air quality updates are available at fire.airnow.gov.
If weather or staffing conditions are not suitable, ignitions will be postponed or canceled.
The Forest Service will provide ongoing updates through its website and official social media channels.
