Precautionary Boil Water Advisory Issued for Upper Canyon Area Following Flood Event

July 11, 2025 —The Village of Ruidoso has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for residents and businesses in the Upper Canyon area due to damage sustained during the July 8 flooding event.

As a result of extreme low water pressure or complete outages, there is an increased risk of microbiological contamination in the Ruidoso Water System serving Upper Canyon. While no contamination has been detected at this time, out of an abundance of caution, customers are advised to boil all water before consumption until further notice.

What You Should Do:

Do not drink tap water without boiling it first. Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before using it for:

  • Drinking

  • Cooking

  • Washing fruits and vegetables

  • Brushing teeth

  • Making ice

  • Preparing baby formula

  • Providing water for pets

More information and precautionary guidance is available in this public health fact sheet.

Health Risks:

While no bacteria have been detected, organisms such as E. coli or fecal coliforms—often introduced during low pressure events—can cause symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, cramps, or headaches. Vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, should take extra care and consult with their healthcare provider if symptoms arise.

Next Steps:

Village crews are actively assessing and repairing damage to water and sewer infrastructure in the Upper Canyon area. Once repairs are complete, the system will undergo thorough testing to ensure water quality. The advisory will be lifted when it is safe to do so—estimated within 24 hours.

Please Note: This advisory applies only to the Upper Canyon area of the Ruidoso Water System. All other areas remain unaffected, and water is safe to use as normal.

For updates or more information, please call Village Hall at (575) 258-4343.

Please share this notice with others in the Upper Canyon area who may not have received it directly, including neighbors, schools, and local businesses.
