Lincoln National Forest Implements Stage 1 Fire Restrictions
March 26, 2026 (RUIDOSO, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest will begin forest-wide Stage 1 Fire Restrictions at 8:00 a.m. on March 27, 2026, due to increasing fire danger across all three ranger districts. These restrictions will remain in place until September 30, 2026, or until rescinded.
Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place to help reduce the risk of human-caused fires on the forest. Violating fire restrictions is a Class B misdemeanor and may result in fines or jail time. Fire Restrictions will apply to all three districts of the forest
What Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Mean
Fires - Not allowed
No building, lighting, or maintaining a fire or campfire at dispersed or undeveloped campsites.
No open flames outside of Forest Service-provided fire rings or grills.

Campfires are allowed only in fire rings or grills provided by the Forest Service in designated, developed recreation sites, such as named campgrounds and picnic areas.
Stoves and Grills
Stoves and Grills - Allowed
Propane or liquid-fuel stoves and grills are allowed during Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.
Must have at least three feet of cleared space around and above the stove or grill.
Must be used safely and fully turned off after cooking or use.
Smoking - Allowed only:
Inside an enclosed vehicle of building
At a developed recreation site.
While standing still in an area at least three feet wide that is clear of all flammable material.
Please fully extinguish and properly dispose of cigarette butts.
Why Fire Restrictions are Needed
Several conditions led to increased fire danger:
A warm, dry winter has resulted in drier vegetation.
Long‑term drought continues across the region.
Higher tree mortality from drought and insects.
Weather forecasts show hotter and drier conditions from March through June.
These factors make it easier for a small spark to start a large wildfire.
