Free Well Water Testing in Ruidoso Set for March 28
March 25, 2026 ( RUIDOSO, NM) — Ruidoso residents who rely on private wells for drinking water are invited to take advantage of a free well water testing event on Saturday, March 28, hosted by the New Mexico Environment Department and the New Mexico Department of Health.
Testing will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 2917 Sudderth Drive. The event is free to the first 100 participants, or while supplies last.
Participants must bring their own water samples for testing. Results will be mailed to households within two to three weeks.
Why Testing Matters
Private well owners are responsible for monitoring their own water quality. This event provides an opportunity to test for key indicators such as pH and nitrate levels—important measures for ensuring safe drinking water. Elevated nitrate levels can pose health risks, particularly for pregnant women and infants.
How to Collect a Sample
Residents planning to participate should follow these guidelines:
Let water run for 2–3 minutes before collecting
Use a clean, odor-free container (glass or plastic)
Collect at least one quart of water
If possible, collect before any filtration or softener systems
Fill the container as close to the testing time as possible
Participants should also bring basic well information, including depth, casing material, and proximity to septic systems.
If you are unable to attend, a labeled sample may be dropped off by a family member or neighbor.
This free testing—typically valued at approximately $150 per test—offers a simple way for residents to better understand and safeguard their household water quality.
