Grindstone Lake Tree Thinning Project Underway; Trail Closures in Effect

January 23, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Village of Ruidoso Forestry Department has begun a tree thinning project on the west side of Grindstone Lake to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk.

The project area covers approximately 35 acres, located on the north two-thirds of the west side of the lake, extending from the southwest restroom area north along Wiggins Way toward Resort Drive. Work will take place within the areas shown on the attached map.

This forestry project is expected to continue for up to 90 days, depending on weather and operational conditions.

What to Expect

Temporary trail closures within the project area for public safety

Forestry equipment and crews working intermittently throughout the area

Short-term access restrictions near active work zones

Visitors are asked to observe posted signage, respect closures, and avoid entering restricted areas while work is underway.

This proactive forest management effort supports long-term ecosystem health and helps reduce hazardous fuel loads around a heavily used recreation area.
