Lincoln National Forest Plans Prescribed Pile Burns Near Ruidoso Beginning December 2, 2025
November 26, 2025 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest has announced plans to conduct prescribed fire operations in the Smokey Bear Ranger District from December 2–12, pending favorable weather and required approvals. These operations are part of ongoing efforts to reduce hazardous fuels, decrease the risk of high-severity wildfires, and protect nearby communities and natural resources.
The planned Ruidoso Tower Prescribed Pile Burn will cover approximately 10 acres of hand-piled vegetation surrounding the Ruidoso Lookout Tower. The Forest Service notes that temporary area closures may be in place for public safety. Visitors are encouraged to watch for posted warning signs along nearby roads and trails before and during ignitions.
Crews will continue monitoring and mop-up work for several weeks after initial ignitions to extinguish hot spots and secure the fire perimeter.
Smoke & Safety
Residents in Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, Hondo Valley, and Alto may notice smoke during operations. Drivers traveling through smoky areas are urged to use caution:
Slow down
Turn on headlights
Use hazard lights in heavy smoke to increase visibility
Air quality updates are available at fire.airnow.gov.
All prescribed fire activities depend on real-time assessments of weather and staffing. If conditions are not suitable, ignitions will be postponed or canceled to ensure the safety and effectiveness of operations.
