Village of Ruidoso Shares Preparedness Information for PNM Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Updated March 9, 2026: Following last week’s Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) tabletop exercise, the Village of Ruidoso is resharing this preparedness information to help residents stay informed about PSPS planning, emergency resources, and steps they can take to prepare.

Public Notice

RUIDOSO, NM – February 14, 2025 – As the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) implements Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) to reduce wildfire risk during extreme conditions, the Village of Ruidoso is working with community partners to help ensure residents are informed, prepared, and supported.

While PSPS decisions are made by PNM based on weather conditions, wildfire risk, and other safety factors, the Village remains focused on reducing potential impacts through proactive communication, emergency planning, and community preparedness efforts.

Community Preparedness and Support

The Village of Ruidoso’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is implementing key measures to protect residents and visitors during a PSPS event. These measures include developing redundant alert systems to provide timely notifications and critical updates through emergency alerts, social media, and collaboration with local agencies.

Additionally, the OEM is prepared to activate community resiliency centers when a PSPS is issued. These centers will be powered and staffed to offer support, information, and essential resources, including charging stations for necessary devices, climate-controlled spaces, and real-time updates on power restoration efforts.

They will also provide potable water, first aid assistance, and temporary shelter for individuals with medical needs or requiring additional support.

The Village is dedicated to ensuring these centers are well-equipped to meet the needs of residents throughout any outage.

How Residents Can Prepare

Residents are strongly encouraged to take proactive steps to prepare for potential power shutoffs. Developing an emergency communication plan is essential and should include designated meeting locations within the neighborhood, in town, and outside the area in case evacuation is necessary. Identifying an out-of-town contact who can relay information and assist with reunification efforts is also advised.

Furthermore, assembling a disaster supply kit with essential items such as non-perishable food, at least one gallon of water per person per day for several days, clothing, blankets, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, hygiene products, important documents, and cash is crucial. Individuals with medical needs should include extra prescriptions, necessary medical equipment, and backup power sources in their preparedness plans.

The Village of Ruidoso encourages residents with access and functional needs to register for the Village Emergency Assistance Registry (VEAR). Although registration does not guarantee assistance, it helps emergency planners and responders better understand the community’s specific needs before, during, and after a disaster. Those who require mobility assistance, medical support, or other specialized care are strongly encouraged to sign up to ensure their needs are considered in emergency response planning. Sign up at www.ruidoso-nm.gov/vear.

By collaborating and planning ahead, the Village of Ruidoso and its residents can lessen the effects of power shutoffs and strengthen community resilience.
