Oak Grove Campground Reopens July 3 Following South Fork Fire Restoration
June 29, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest has announced that Oak Grove Campground will reopen to the public on Friday, July 3, following extensive restoration work after the South Fork Fire.
Located along NM 532 (Ski Run Road) near Ruidoso, Oak Grove Campground has undergone significant recovery efforts to restore safe public access and recreational opportunities. The project was completed through a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation.
Restoration crews removed more than 2,000 hazardous trees and completed cleanup across approximately 34 acres, preparing the campground’s 30 campsites for reopening. Wood removed during the project was milled locally or provided as firewood, supporting area businesses throughout the recovery process.
“This reopening represents another important milestone in our community’s ongoing recovery,” said Village officials. “We’re grateful to the Lincoln National Forest, the National Forest Foundation, and the many crews whose work continues to restore access to the outdoor places that are such an important part of life in and around Ruidoso.”
Visitors planning to camp over the Independence Day weekend should note:
First come, first served: Reservations are not available. Campers are encouraged to arrive early, as campsites are expected to fill quickly.
Ongoing improvements: Additional enhancement work will continue in the campground, and visitors may encounter work crews during their stay.
Road construction: Travelers should allow extra time for possible delays on NM 532 (Ski Run Road), where roadway improvements are underway this summer.
The reopening marks another step in the long-term restoration of recreational areas affected by the South Fork Fire and reflects the continued commitment of local, state, and federal partners to restoring public lands while supporting safe outdoor recreation.
