New Monsoon Season Resource Helps Ruidoso Prepare for Flash Flood Risks
June 22, 2025 – Ruidoso, NM — As summer rains return to the mountains, the Village of Ruidoso has launched a dedicated Monsoon Season Awareness page to help residents and visitors stay informed and safe during one of the region’s most hazardous weather periods.
Accessible at ruidoso-nm.gov/monsoon-season-awareness, the new resource hub includes safety tips, preparedness guidance, emergency alerts, and one especially valuable tool: the RAIN (Ruidoso All-Hazard Information Network) map. This interactive map highlights flood-prone areas, current weather alerts, and road conditions, helping the public stay aware and make informed decisions before and during a weather event.
Flash flooding is a seasonal concern in Ruidoso, especially during late summer when monsoon storms can bring brief but intense rainfall. Areas near recent burn scars are particularly susceptible, as the landscape is slower to absorb water. The new awareness page offers a centralized source for timely updates and local resources, helping people respond confidently to changing conditions.
Why It Matters
Ruidoso’s mountainous terrain, combined with narrow arroyos and dry creek beds, makes it particularly vulnerable to flash flooding. Roads that appear safe can become impassable in seconds, and low-lying areas near rivers, bridges, and culverts are at increased risk. The monsoon season—from late June through early September—is the most common time for these events to occur.
The Village’s new webpage includes:
Current Conditions & Alerts – Stay informed with weather warnings, road closures, and emergency notifications.
RAIN Map Access – Visualize risk areas and monitor conditions in real time.
Before the Storm – Prepare your home, vehicle, and family before severe weather hits.
During a Flood – Know what to do—and what not to do—when water levels rise.
After the Flood – Access cleanup tips, safety checks, and recovery resources.
Flood Safe Partners – Find local businesses on higher ground offering temporary shelter during flash flooding events.
A Community Effort
One of the most community-driven elements of this initiative is the Flood Safe Partner Program, which identifies participating businesses that serve as temporary safe havens during flooding events. These partners are listed on the awareness page and display a badge at their entrances to help the public identify safe locations nearby.
Whether you live in Ruidoso or are visiting for the season, it’s important to know where to go and how to respond when weather conditions change quickly. This new online resource makes that easier by bringing together trusted guidance, local tools like the RAIN map, and the support of community partners—all in one accessible location.
