Lincoln National Forest Lifts Fire Restrictions

July 23, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Lincoln National Forest has lifted all fire restrictions across its three ranger districts following recent rainfall, cooler temperatures, and improving forest conditions. Forest officials also lowered the overall fire danger rating to Moderate.

Fire restrictions were originally implemented to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during periods of extreme fire danger. According to the U.S. Forest Service, increasing soil and fuel moisture brought on by the monsoon season has significantly reduced the potential for rapid fire growth and spread. While lightning-caused fires remain possible during thunderstorms, the overall wildfire risk has decreased.

Although restrictions have been lifted, the Forest Service reminds visitors that responsible fire prevention remains essential.

Visitors are encouraged to:

  • Avoid building campfires during hot, dry, or windy conditions.

  • Never leave a campfire unattended. Fully extinguish campfires with water, stir the ashes and coals, and ensure no heat remains before leaving.

  • Report abandoned campfires to the appropriate ranger district or local sheriff’s office.

  • Remember that fireworks remain prohibited at all times on National Forest lands.

  • Properly extinguish and dispose of cigarettes.

  • Avoid parking hot vehicles over tall grass or vegetation.

  • Ensure trailer safety chains do not drag and create sparks.

Anyone planning to recreate on the Lincoln National Forest should remain aware of current conditions and follow all posted guidance from the U.S. Forest Service.

Village fire restrictions remain in effect. The Lincoln National Forest’s decision applies only to National Forest lands and does not change the Village of Ruidoso’s current Level I Fire Restrictions, which remain in effect within Village limits. Residents and visitors should continue following all applicable local regulations while recreating in the area.

For more information about the Village’s current fire restrictions, including what activities are permitted and prohibited under Level I Fire Restrictions, read our previous announcement: Village of Ruidoso Reduces Fire Restrictions to Level I
