Village of Ruidoso Earns National Weather Service StormReady Recognition

June 19, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — The Village of Ruidoso has been officially recognized as a StormReady community by the National Weather Service, joining a small group of New Mexico jurisdictions that have earned the designation.

The StormReady program recognizes communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to emergency preparedness, public warning systems, coordinated response capabilities, and effective communication before, during, and after hazardous weather events.

The designation reflects years of investment in emergency management, preparedness planning, public education, warning systems, and community resilience initiatives. It also acknowledges the Village’s ongoing efforts to improve how residents and visitors receive critical information during emergencies.

To achieve StormReady status, communities must meet rigorous standards related to emergency operations, warning dissemination, communication redundancy, public outreach, and coordination with the National Weather Service.

The recognition comes as Ruidoso continues recovery and preparedness efforts following multiple years of wildfire, flooding, severe weather, and other emergency operations. Village officials noted that the designation reflects the community-wide commitment behind the Village’s “One Village Response” philosophy, which emphasizes collaboration across departments, agencies, and response partners.

Over the past several years, the Village has expanded its emergency preparedness and public warning capabilities through initiatives including the Outdoor Warning System, NOAA Weather Radio outreach, flood warning enhancements, emergency planning efforts, and public preparedness education.

“This accomplishment reflects the dedication of Village staff, first responders, partner agencies, and community leaders who work every day to strengthen public safety and resilience,” said Emergency Management Director Eric Queller. “While StormReady recognition is an important milestone, it also reinforces our commitment to continue improving the capabilities our residents and visitors depend on.”

The Village of Ruidoso’s StormReady designation remains in effect through June 4, 2030.
