Sierra Blanca Regional Airport Upgrades Weather Reporting System Ahead of Commercial Air Service
June 15, 2026 (Ruidoso, NM) — Sierra Blanca Regional Airport has completed the installation of a new FAA-certified Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), restoring certified weather reporting capabilities and supporting the airport’s upcoming commercial air service.
The new Airport Weather Advisor® AWOS IIIPT was installed following the malfunction and outage of the airport’s previous weather observing equipment. The expedited replacement effort was completed through coordination among the Village of Ruidoso, the New Mexico Department of Transportation Aviation Division, local maintenance personnel, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and Mesotech International, Inc.
The upgraded system arrives at a pivotal time for Sierra Blanca Regional Airport as the facility prepares to welcome its first commercial airline service, providing direct connections between Ruidoso and Denver. Certified aviation weather observations are required to support safe and reliable commercial flight operations.
The AWOS IIIPT provides automated reporting of critical weather conditions, including:
Wind speed and direction
Temperature and dew point
Altimeter setting
Visibility
Precipitation
Cloud height and sky conditions
Present weather conditions
Thunderstorm detection
These observations help pilots, airport personnel, commercial carriers, and other aviation users make informed operational decisions and support safe arrivals and departures.
In addition to supporting aviation operations, the system will provide valuable weather observations for the broader Ruidoso region. Once fully commissioned and connected to aviation weather dissemination networks, the data may contribute to information available through NOAA, the National Weather Service, and local forecasting services. The airport’s location in a mountainous environment makes it an important observation point for monitoring rapidly changing weather conditions and improving situational awareness for emergency managers, forecasters, residents, and visitors.
The new system also includes modern cloud-connected technology, remote monitoring capabilities, proactive maintenance support, and an integrated weather camera that enhances visibility into current airport conditions.
The installation reflects the continued importance of reliable aviation infrastructure in supporting tourism, public safety, business travel, and economic development throughout the Ruidoso region. As commercial air service begins, the upgraded weather system will help ensure that pilots and operators have access to accurate, certified weather information needed for safe and efficient operations.
